The Financial Google Times have begun
I just found a new playground for my gambling vice:
Still in BETA-state like Google usually releases new services.
Getting current stock rates in combination with the most recent reports concerning your search phrase (ticker symbol, name, branch of business, product etc.) is not a new thing but it seems Google did a good job. The interactive AJAX interface is really nice. I love it! Here is an example for China Mobile (one of my favorites ;)).

IBM Qualitaet MADE IN CHINA

Who needs backups?
Again, a piece of hardware is freakin’ out and I decided to replace it before it’s too late. However, that remembered me to keep my backups up-to-date. A consultant from Intershop told me (after his 4th drink in a bar in downtown bl city): “Nobody wants to make Backups but everyone wants to press Restore!” (He smells the rat!)
That’s why I have just started reading “Torture-testing Backup and Archive Programs” from Elizabeth D. Zwicky. She evaluates the most common backup methods for unix systems like tar, cpio, dump/restore, amanda, etc. I need a better backup solution for my own data (notebook, desktop, server) and we are currently also improving our company backup plans.
So if I found a solution for my tasks (starting with my most important machine – the notebook aka mobileboz) I will publish my backup/restore plan.
Addition: 1 hour later I am still as dumb as before. Now I will check the USENIX Paper for Soft Updates. Perhaps I can find some information there – the topic sounds quite interesting.
Cheap Flights in China (aka
ctrip.com (english version) is an interesting internet site where you can find quite good discounted flights – national and international ones. The interface is still a little bit buggy. However, you can get flights from Kunming to Dali for only 170 RMB (== 17 Euro) compared to a bus ticket for about 100 RMB that’s a kind of cheap. I guess it’s worth a try…
